Palapala Moho ʻĀina: POLICY

The Palapala Moho ʻĀina is a collection of policy ideas that Moho ʻĀina candidates will explore and pursue in upcoming legislative sessions. This is a proactive approach to collaborating ahead of elections, and supports our communities to visualize how much better Hawaiʻi could be with pono people in positions of authority and leadership. The Palapala Moho ʻĀina also serves as a seed for a specific path to take once enough pono people ACTUALLY HOLD positions of authority and leadership.

REAL Democracy

  • Aha moku framework- people in specific communities with a leadership voice in conversations, have an understanding of importance of each community role within each district, who legislators work closely with as they make important decisions

  • MEANINGFUL Hawaiian input, not BS about slapping a Hawaiian name onto a building or a piece of technology

  • Development of a sovereign wealth fund

  • Fully publicly funded campaigns

Education

  • Investing in our keiki's education: daycare - college

  • Investing in programs that our students are interested in and would give them opportunities for the future career paths they take. (debate, robotics, agriculture clubs, etc.)

  • Invest in high pay for teachers to keep talented locals at home

  • Free school meals for all students, pre-k through university.

  • Free community college for in-state (residents of HI) students - covering tuition and mandatory fees, requiring full-time enrollment, a 2.5/3 GPA

  • Expand available curricula to include Hawaiian-based learning (language, culture, etc)

Housing

  • Housing as a human right

  • Incremental decommodification of housing

  • Building housing in a way that mālamas both people and ʻĀina.

  • No more locals moving away

  • Finish Voluntary Deed Restriction program throughout Maui County

  • Building housing in a way that allows both people and ʻĀina to thrive

  • Be ready to support folks afforded by section 8 cuts.

  • A stop to sweeps, and a different route to address homelessness

  • Adequate funding for mental health support and programs

  • Kauhale, prioritizing Kūpuna

Aloha ʻĀina

  • Preservation of Mauna Kea and other conservation districts (CDUP)

  • Aʻole TMT

  • Protect wai & ʻĀina – enforcement for illegal water use & land abuse, community-led stewardship of land & watersheds, depoliticize CWRM, support reforestation efforts

  • Mālama i ka wai, Hoʻopalekana ʻāina, ʻĀINA BACK

  • Acknowledge the effectiveness of Hawaiian understandings, values, and solutions.

Increase Agriculture

  • Fund and support ahupuaʻa style community gardens

  • Effectively fund hawaiian agriculture and ʻāina restoration

  • Finish data collection to justify the $10M invested into ag microgrants and invest more

  • Incentivize regenerative tourism- I.E tourism that contributes to our ʻĀina and food production

  • Support education for aloha ʻĀina and agricultural production in all schools.

Keiki + Kupuna Care

  • Fund early childcare

  • Have daycare and pre-K with universal access for children aged 1–5, high-quality, play-based education, and income-based capped fees

  • Support & compensate family caregivers

  • Fund universal Kūpuna care to take the burden off of local families and ensure Kūpuna receive the care they need

  • "Adopt a kūpuna" like "adopt a highway" program.

General

  • Decreasing DHHL blood quantum for successors

  • Demilitarization

  • Decolonial international solidarity with the global working class

  • A bill that fast tracks ability to change place names back to the places original placename.

  • Reduce violence in a community by building community through food

  • Vision Zero type plans for reduction of traffic fatalities 

Healthcare

  • Expanding health care access to improve chronic health outcomes

  • Adequate funding for mental health support and programs

  • Prioritizing rural health and expanding capacity for urban health

  • Fund the restoration of models of community health

Cost of Living

  • Child tax credit

  • No taxes on groceries and medical care

  • Fair taxes for the wealthy

  • Facilitating robust state capacity, high paying and high skilled government jobs that work efficiently

  • Incentivizing regenerative tourism.
